Shotokan Karate is a Japanese martial art that teaches self-esteem, self-discipline, self-defense and self-confidence. We combine traditional training methods developed over centuries with modern exercise science to produce maximum results in the participants. Classes are taught in a structured format with emphasis on precision and application of technique.

Shotokan Karate is a non-contact martial art that improves balance and muscle tone, increases flexibility, and stimulates the cardiovascular system in a safe and effective manner. By learning how to "move from your center" you will notice an improvement in coordination, breathing, and an improved sense of well-being. It is an ideal program for those who are looking for an activity that allows the individual to develop skills at their own pace in a non-competitive atmosphere.

The West Bank Karate Club is a traditional dojo that promotes the tenets of the founder of Shotokan Karate, Gichin Funakoshi: seek perfection of character; endeavor to excel; be honest and forthright; respect others and develop self control. As a non-contact style, Shotokan is a perfect martial art for individuals interested in traditional training without suffering injury.

Our brand new building is designed for martial arts and movement classes with a sprung wood floor, high ceilings, and locker rooms with showers. The training floor is a unique 'floating system' of maple hardwood that allows maximum resilience with minimum impact to the joints. The Center is 3,800 square feet equipped with heavy bags and makiwara boards, men's and women's dressing rooms complete with showers and lockers. All club members are encouraged to use the facility for self-training whenever there is open floor time.

The WBKC is an affiliate dojo of the International Traditional Karate Federation and the American Amateur Karate Federation. We welcome all Shotokan Karateka to visit and train with us regardless of previous background or affiliation.
