Shotokan Karate is a traditional martial art that was developed in Okinawa and introduced to Japan in 1920 by its founder,
Master Gichin Funakoshi (see Karate History). Karate is a very effective method of self defense, but most people enjoy the art because the movements improve muscle tone
and stamina, increase flexibility, balance, and coordination as well as develop a keen awareness of correct posture and breathing.
Our adult classes meet Monday through Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. (see Adult Karate - Schedule & Fees)
Because Shotokan Karate is taught in a non-contact format everyone can participate without fear of injury. Students learn
how to create maximum power in their punches, kicks and blocks by using training equipment such as focus pads and kicking
bags. In this traditional method of practice, individuals progress at their own pace in a non-competitive environment. Shotokan
is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and the classes are taught in a structured format by professional instructors.

In 1979 Sensei Nina Chenault founded the West Bank Karate Club. It is one of the oldest and most established Karate schools
in Minnesota with a reputation for quality. In 2004 the Movement Arts Center was designed and built as the permanent home
of the West Bank Club and includes the following: large sprung wood training floor, mirrors, women's and men's locker rooms
with showers, air conditioning, and free off-street parking.
The West Bank Karate Club is a member of the International Traditional Karate Federation and the American Amateur Karate Federation. We encourage all Shotokan enthusiasts to visit and train with us regardless of previous background or affiliations.
